Monday at the Museum

So today we went back to the Museum and worked on pre-sorting ceramics. The goal is to separate out the diagnostic sherds (distinctive fabrics, designs, decorations, etc) so that when Brandon Olson arrives (he is our Hellenistic ceramicist), instead of 27 crates of pottery to look at, he will only need to look at about 4 crates – a much more manageable proposition. The pottery we are pre-sorting came from a large cache that appears to have been a large hole where the inhabitants of Vigla dumped a bunch of pottery as they cleaned up the site from something. Many of the sherds show burning, so a destruction event is certainly possible. While the artifacts are all broken, there were some interesting ones with stamps or special marks. So far, the majority of the sherds are basic coarse wares, but we will see if that trends holds up – we have pre-sorted 17 crates and have 11 to go.

Since I will be starting my chip research soon, I wanted to recap my previous research.
