Cyprus Peace Talks Continue to Drag Out

The ongoing peace talks between Greek Cypriot President Demetris Christofias and Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat have been going on for over 16 months – since September 2008. What little progress has been made could be lost in the upcoming April election in Northern Cyprus, if Talat loses and he currently trails in the polls. An article on the BBC website says that:

  • “The two leaders said there had been progress in the past three weeks over issues such as governance and power-sharing. Whilst agreement appears near on certain issues, others such as territory and property, let alone security, seem seem harder to resolve…”

I know that some people have been optimistic about a solution, but I never felt that there was enough common ground to facilitate an agreement that both sides would accept.
