Last fall Abilene Christian University provided about 1,000 of its incoming freshman class with iPhones as an experiment. On the ACU website it says that:
- “Mobile technology is shaping the way we live, work and learn at ACU. Since education can now take place in the classroom or virtually anywhere, we are committed to exploring mobile learning technology that makes sense for our students and their future.”
While the university says it is too early to provide data on the results, early anecdotal evidence on their mobile learning experience leads the university to believe that the students use their phones at least once a day for academic purposes. The university is continuing its experiment again this year. It will be interesting to see how it progresses and if others try similar programs, if budgets allow them to.
